What is Kick Off Your Heels all about?

When Sue Bleiweiss and Jamie Fingal found out that more women die each year in the US from cardiovascular disease than all cancers combined they decided it was time to put together a project to help raise awareness of that horrifying statistic.

Our goal is to raise $5,000 for The Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California - because they not only treat women, but also educate and do major research for this disease with women.  Katie Couric talked to Barbra  Streisand about the heart center and you can watch excerpts from that interview here.

We've decided to kick off our heels to reach our goal of raising $5,000 to donate to The Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Hospital  and issued a challenge to some of the most talented and gifted artists we know to do the same.  These artists will be turning their heels into works of art to be sold in May of 2013.  All the money raised from these incredible shoes of art will be donated to the The Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Hospital.

We're incredibly excited about this project and we hope that you'll help us spread the word about it, by putting our blog button on your blog, talking about it on social media sites, and when the time comes, purchasing a pair of art shoes!  We also hope that you'll consider answering our call for art and creating a pair of art shoes to donate to the cause.  You'll find more information about that here.

We will be inviting some of the artists who are creating a pair of art shoes to blog about how they transformed their ordinary heels into a work of art right here on this blog so stay tuned for that.  In the meantime, check out the links on the other pages of this blog to find out how you can submit a pair of art shoes for this fundraiser and view some of our inspiring sample shoes.

  1. What a great idea! I am a quilter who has recently made some heart-healthy changes. I've been looking around for heart-art projects like these and am so glad I found your group. I look forward to following your project. Take care, Byrd

  2. This is an amazingly wonderful idea and I intend on getting involved!
My father was a cardiac patient for many many years so this subject is near and dear to my heart for both men and women.

    Very inspiring!

  3. Can we join this effort by sending heels to you for auction? I would love to put all my 'stuff' and imagination to work on a pair and help out your cause. Where would I send them??? We have heart problems in our history and our family. I would love to be part of this.
